'79 Spider 2000.
Tach is possessed . Ok in fairness it could be haunted by a really heavy footed former owner.....
Shows random revs, typically spiking and way higher than I'm actually running her.
I have a manual but no wiring diagrams. I've only had the car for a month so I can't guarantee that the tach wire is hooked up right at the coil (if that's even where it hooks up).
What wires/grounds do I check first or is my tach fried?
Thanks!
My Tach is Psycho.

I think the tach gets is signal off the minus side of the coil. may want to look at that wire and connection.

Thanks for the quick reply... Do you know what color wire should be connected there? just double checking.azruss wrote:I think the tach gets is signal off the minus side of the coil. may want to look at that wire and connection.
On another note, I was told that the hot setup was the carb from an 1800.. Installed one today!

did you also use the intake manifold from an 1800? I think thats an important part of the swap.

I believe that you have a distributor with a magnetic pickup, not points. Check they wires under the distributor plate for fraying.

Cooked wires on the magnetic pickup under the distributor cap.
1st symptom : crazy tach.
2nd symptom: starting /running issues.
Easy fix.

Also, check the distributor hold down nut. If it is loose, the distributor won't ground properly and the tach will act crazy. While this should also allow your timing to slip (mine did this once), if the plug wires are attached just right the timing may stay put.
Good luck.
