Facebook no more!

Post by toplessexpat »

So - after a number of years on Facebook, I've just deleted my account. It was good - engaging with people, including the Fiat Spider and Fiat 124 Spider groups :)

In a couple of meetings over the past few weeks, I've had clients ask me about my Fiat - nothing unusual, people know I have one. Then it became a couple of questions over my family. It turns out that no matter how hard you button down your current Privacy settings - it's all too easy for some cross-tagging of photos or posts in your history to provide some degree of insight - and going back through "everything" is a bit of a nightmare. Anyway - turns out (after having a couple of drinks with one guy) that his company actually commissioned a "Social Media Investigator" to go through Facebook, LinkedIn etc. and find out what they good.

Needless to say - the usefulness of Facebook is in my immediate family and friends, so starting afresh has removed the legacy of historic material to wade through.

Annoying though...

Amen to THAT! I understand the lure and convenience of Facebook and other social media avenues. BUT the implications are not worth the risk, in my opinion. One can become "guilty by association." I've never subscribed to Facebook, LinkedIn, MySpace, etc. for that very reason. There's too much "phishing" and data mining. Information about "you" has become profit for someone else.

Thanks for sharing, Just deleted my account as to many people at work are always wanting to know what I'm up to and will do anything to know your business.

Also recently heard of a family that there house was broken into while they where on holidays, apparently there kids told everyone on Facebook exactly when they where leaving and would be back, needless to say to an empty house !

Will just stick to email & FiatSpider.com :D

I don't post anything that I don't want to be public knowledge and am careful not to post vacation pics/details until I am back home. Have to watch out for others tagging you though. Also, their facial recognition gives me the creeps and I don't like how it try's to link to all of your other accounts.
