Prima 3 - has anyone used these form Vick's

Post by 84pinin »

I was looking through the threads adn saw some posts on the Prima 2 from Vick's. I see they also sell a Prima 3 with PUR bushings.

Has anyone had any experience with these? :?:
Thanks

besides the lack of shock mounts, I certainly wouldn't set up my front end with 10 degrees of caster

Our poly bushings are formulated to provide enough give to preserve other suspension components (as well as the driver's teeth!), while providing performance suitable for full race applications.
I've never driven a car set up with poly bushings, but all I've ever heard or read is that they are way to stiff for any use outside of a race course. The car just crashes over bumps and potholes like it has no suspension at all.

They are tempting to consider as a superior replacement for the rubber bushings and maybe their density and stiffness can be modified to make them more compiant for the street. I'm not interested in being an early adaptor though. I'll wait for a whole lot of other more adventurous types to report back first.

And looking over the ad again they say the set up is for already "lowered" Spiders, which means the springs have been cut. Even less suspension.

as i've already said in one of the topics, i've had poly bushings on upper rear control arms and in the end they caused damage to chasis.

now, i haven't tryed that on front suspension but i have a sneaking suspicion that something would give way sooner rather than later.
however, there might be diferent matrials out there, something with a lot more give would work well.

when it came up to my car, i did this

mercedes e class, Lockeed Delphi.

nothing that couldn't be solved with a lathe and a mig welder

issue of rigidity solved

in the end

Everyone, thanks a bunch. Prima 2's it is. The durability of poly was tempting but having read through all of the feedback and links, I'll stick with rubber for my relatively casual use.

I think some of you guys are confusing polyurethane bushings with delrin-acetal/nylon bushings. Polyurethane is more durable and only slightly harder than rubber. Poly bushings can be used on the street or track. Poly bushings are typically red, blue, or yellow. Delrin-acetal/nylon bushings are very hard, and only for use on the track. Delrin/nylon bushings are typically white.

unfortunately, modern chemistry allows for syntetic materials to be made in any colour and there's no internationaly accepted colour coding agreement in place

I think it IS fortunate that modern chemistry allows for synthetic materials to be made in any color. I'd like to have some polyurethane suspension bushings in orange. Unfortunately many polyurethane bushing manufactures "typically" only make them in red, blue, or yellow.

At one point in time Vick's carried delrin bushings for the front suspension arms intended only for track use. They were......white. "Natural" or "virgin" delrin is "typically" white, with black being the second most prevalent color. This is the case for "most" synthetic materials such as: Acetal, Nylon, Teflon, Polypropylene, ABS, UHMW, HDPE, LDPE, PTFE, etc. etc.

The material you turned on your lathe was most likely not Polyurethane unless it was a thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), which are not readily available. However it could have been any of the aforementioned "natural" polymers listed which are readily available.

most poly bushings are too firm for street use. I've used some SuperPro that have air chambers in them and are listed as street bushings. These are terrific bushings, providing a very firm feel without any harshness. A solid poly bushing will be too harsh for most drivers

ok, it IS fortunate that they can be made in any colour but this doesn't help when trying to find the right material for this purpose.
the bar of white material you see in the lathe is quite elastic. despite being 2 inches thick i could bend it about 20 degrees with my hands and it would snap back. the most dificult thing to machine i've done so far. elastic but tough. i got it from a shelf at a company that makes all sorts of plastic stuff, it was never sold at any shops here.
now, remember that i live on the opposite side of the planet from you so no telling what colour coding is used if any.

rubber bushings for mercedes i used at the front have alumunium inner sleeve that is 2mm thick so there's less rubber than in original bushings and that gave good result - better response, a bit more rigid front suspension but not too harsh ride.

why use bushings diferent from original? because i never found aftermarket ones for 124 (or lada for that matter since they're exactly the same), that would last more than 20k in everyday driving conditions
