adjusting parking brake

Post by bgrisi »

I replaced the brakes and rotors on my 79 spider, and found I also needed to replace the rear driver's side caliper. I reconnected the parking brake cable, but cannot get both calipers to adjust evenly. The old caliper gets tight enough, but I am able to force the tire around on the driver's side. Is there a step needed when replacing a caliper to activate the caliper so that the parking brake will adjust? The brakes work fine with the pedal. Any help will be appreciated

I'm not much of a mechanic so I've trained myself to look at the easy things first.

So, is it possible that the parking brake cable isn't pulling evenly to both sides? Could it be getting hung up along the way? On mine there are little guides on the trailing arms to direct the cable, if one side isn't running along it that could cause the issue.

Basic, I know, but it can't hurt to check.

Thanks Doug,
My cable is threaded through the guides on both sides. When I pull up the hand brake lever and get under to look at the springs at the caliper arms, it seems as though they are equally collapsed, but even though I can feel resistance on the driver's side rear wheel, I am still able to force it to turn by hand. On the passenger side, it is too tight to do so. I know that one caliper is tightening more than the other, just can't figure out why. I thought perhaps there is something that I should have done when installing the rebuilt caliper that would affect the adjustment.

I appreciate your going to basics. Cant tell you how many times I have started from the beginning and had just missed something simple.
