Motor Mount Assembly

Post by mschreiber75 »

I am finishing up a rebuild of the front end of my '79. During the process I noticed that the lower bolts on the crossmember had broken free, so I removed the crossmember from the car to repair it. While I was removing the hard to reach bolts that secure the motor mounts to the crossmember a few washers and spacers fell out after I loosened the bolts. Now I am trying to put the crossmember back in the car, but am unsure of the order of these spacers and washers (do these go above the crossmember or below). Perhaps they are not part of the factory installation (notice the different diameter holes on the small washers)?

Likely they were under the lower nuts - well actually on top of, as the studs are pointing down :-)
Between the lower nuts and the crossmember, as there is a large slot in the crossmember and a regular size washer may just pull through.

if you look at the washer on the lower right of the picture, you can see the slot imprint in the washer. originally that washer and a cut lock washer then the nut, i usually replace the cut lock washer with a nylock nut

you have spacers in 3 locations to contend with. the spacers between the crossmember and the 2 a-arm mounting studs control caster and camber. the horizontal bolt on the inside between the cross member and the unibody control the location of the crossmember in the unibody. If you have a situation like mine, where the wheel is decambered without spacers, then spacers need to be added between the crossmember and unibody. this moves the lower a-arm in in respect to the upper a-arm

Thanks guys for all your responses, and noticing the slot on the one washer. I will do my best to try to put it back together the way it was, assuming the PO did this on purpose since the alignment seemed to be good before I pulled the whole front end apart. I am going to bring it to a local Fiat expert when I am ready for alignment. I will keep you posted with the outcome. If it is similar to azruss' situation I am guessing the spacer (larger washer) was added to the bottom of the motor mount, to push the lower A-arm lower wrt to the upper. So it would go bottom motor mount stud->large washer->crossmember->smaller washer->lock washer->nut

or replace lockwasher->nut with nylock nut
