Re: Media blaster
i like glass bead for aluminum. i have tried walnut for aluminum but it takes a little longer for results and it's make a hell of a lot more dust. for regular steel, i like to use iron oxyde... a cheaper thing for steel that i like to use is that black coal stuff they sell at lowes... it's only about $7.00 for a 50lbs bag... to see the results of glass bead on aluminum check out my thread: http://www.fiatspider.com/f08/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=23075
The flywheel and the bracket next to it was done with the black coal stuff (sorry, i can't remember what it's actually called)..

Re: Media blaster
Jim, I have run many jobs as an industrial contractor and soda beat all the other media's hands down. It's messy but very effective and nothing to dispose of. It was all biodegradable. There are faster media's like black majic but I think they are too harsh for our cars. Glass worked very well on my front end parts and I was pleased with the results. I'm going to see about adding surfactant to the water used to bioblast with soda to stop the rust until primer can be applied. I don't know if it will work but I know people who do. When I paint this is how I want to strip. I have removed the paint from a coke can and never blemished the metal. Water is needed to hold down the dust. With proper ventalation, may be able to use it without water.

Re: Media blaster
Jim, I must disagree with you on the Eastwood soda blaster. It really all depends on what your looking for. Do you want a cabinet for parts or something usefull for paint removal from the car body? You can a actually buy a nozzle that attaches to the end of a pressure washer that will work Miracles. For an all around blaster this would work great. For a contained system, not so well.fiat218 wrote:http://www.ebay.com/itm/20-Gallon-Sand- ... 5ae917a67f

Re: Media blaster
If parts is all your going to blast, get a blasting cabinet. We have one at the plant that uses a fine sand and it also worked well on parts. Haven't tried to blast any aluminum but I'm sure it would be fine. A neighbor of mine had a small blasting unit and he stripped the paint from his tractor in no time. When I buy one it will be like the Eastwood unit that will blow sand or soda.

Re: Media blaster
Make sure the gloves and seals are all in good shape. My friend has one of these things and it did my wheels last year really well. One thing to consider.... He cautioned strongly about exhausting and filtering the air outside. There have been apparently many cases of lung disease caused by the fine particulate that these produce. We ran the plumbing from the cabinet outside through a window fitting and ran the vacuum canister out there to avoid problems.
