Lug nuts

On driver side rear, lug nuts are real hard too remove. Plus on broke off in the axle. Does this mean the axle needs to be changed now?

sounds like badly rusted thread or someone cross threaded the bolt and now you have ripped up threads. You may want to take a very close look at the threads and see what kind of shape they are in. If they are all torn up, i would suggest a new/used axle. afterall, this is what holds your wheels on the car.
