New EZ Cool, Carpet, & 'Soft Touch' Console

Post by srwilson »

I thought I'd post some pictures of my recent interior work.

I started the process by stripping out all the old carpet, and jute insulation and a thorough inspection for rust. The only rust found was on the bent tabs that held the fuel lines in place. So I was extremely lucky there. All factory tar was in good shape with no cracks or separation; I did not think it necessary to remove.

Next the installation of the EZ Cool. I might have gone a little overboard but it was sort of a fun and the adhesive fumes may have had something to do with that.

Next the Carpet went in. Found this carpet set on eBay. The seller had purchased it from Italy several years ago but it never made it to his car. It’s in mine now.

Then came the Soft Touch console from our friend Csaba. I really like this console and it should stand up to anything I would throw at it. I did try to paint it using the SEM paint to change the color but it did not hold the paint because the material stretch factor. But after getting it all back together I don’t think it looks half bad. Actually I think I like it.

Hey thanks guys! :D

I'm looking to replace that ugly radio. It looks totally out of place. Any good suggestions?

I "modified" (cut a big hole in) my glove box and hid the radio inside to preserve the look of the cockpit. Not for everyone, but works for me, and then it doesn't matter what the unit itself looks like.

When I get around to the interior, I will just be using an amp connected to my iphone. No radio. I plan on hiding the amp in the trunk and just making a stand for the iphone where the ashtray is. I'm not sure what to do with the existing radio space, though.

That's what I was thinking too, or maybe satellite radio with a remote.

I found a place that sells a cable to connect an iphone to an amp. The cable has a volume control and charges the iphone. I was thinking of making a stand with the connector in it and putting it where the ashtray is. I also found a place that makes a larger touchscreen for the iphone. The larger screen gets mounted in the dash and acts just as a nav system, audio system, etc. Eventually the day will come when you do not purchase a nav system from the car dealer. The car will have an screen and an adapter you can purchase for your smartphone. If you think about it, having a smartphone and nav system is redundant.

Excellent post, and well timed for my purposes! Just finished the last of the old tar and starting the coating in a week or so. Then to insulation, carpet, etc....

Question: did either of you use anything between the EZCool and the carpet? I'm wondering how close to the original thickness of tar/jute/carpet is to EZCool/carpet combo.

Stillworking the pix site issue....almost there.

On the passenger side I did use a piece of dense sound deadening foam, but not anywhere else. EzCool & carpet is not as thick as jute and carpet, but I can't really tell the difference when riding in the car.

I think Pete added a layer of foam in his install, but I could be mistaken.

Good luck. I think you'll like it once you've got it done. I'm very happy with mine.

Looks great and I like the black better too. How much EZ Cool did you buy?

Hey Thanks! I think the black looks good and much better than the console that was in there. The vinyl had cracked and was missing in several places.

1 4x10 roll of EZ Cool did the job for me, with a little left over. One other thing I forgot to mention before was that I taped all the seams with aluminum tape. I was hoping to seal it up and keep dirt and debris from getting in the cracks. Maybe. Picked the aluminum tape up at Home Depot.
