my son finally sees the light

Post by BigMikeMc »

I have had 2 1980 spiders I have been working on/ restoring/ tinkering on for about 7 or 8 months now, and my oldest son has always said that he thought they were ugly, no good, would never want one. I keep telling him that one day he will get a little older and lot wiser and come to not only like but love the cars. He says never gonna happen (ah the wonderful ignorance of youth, what I would give to be 18 and dumb again.) So today we are out driving around and we ran across a sweet 1969 spider that has sat for a couple of years but a little tinkering and it started right up. It needs a little work, but a lot less than my 2 current ones. Me and the old guy who owns it start talking about price and the next thing I know my boy has taken over the conversation and actually negoiated a price for the car for himself! Not sure if I'm mad or proud, but I am smiling at how he now owns one of these"little ugly" cars and he is walking around with cat who ate the canary grin. I knew he would come around. :)

Yes, the fiat virus is highly contagious. My kids grew up with my 70 spider and their first cars were coupes. When my son graduated from high school, he was given the choice of a nice clean coupe or a set of golf clubs. He only chose the coupe after i promised him i would help "trick" the car. When he moved to Arizona, he bought my current project and started working on it. He soon ran out of time with a blossoming career, kids and the purchase of a supra twin turbo. The car was relagated to backyard basketcase status. When I got to AZ, I started looking for a spider and bought his only with the promise that it gets willed back to him. Secretly, my daughter would love to own one but she has sunk into the world of a van driving soccer mom. :(

My 25 year old son asked to borrow the Spider to take his girlfriend out on her birthday, on a beautiful day last summer. My 18 year old also asks to borrow the car so he can "practice driving a car with a manual transmission". He was a bit disappointed a couple of weeks back, when I told him "no", because I was driving SHELOB to the monthly Fiat Enthusiasts NW meeting. Such is life. 8)

At the time I brought the car home on the car hauler, the family was pretty dis-interested. Fast forward to a solid running car with a shinier finish.....

My 10 and 12 year old boys, have fun shifting for me. My daughter smiles when driving with me with the top down. They get it :D :D :D
