heater lever knobs

Post by burlybryan »

Does anyone have a source for good knobs? The ones I recently got are really stiff rubber and split in half while installing. At $7+/- a pop, I'd rather not keep experimenting. FYI - this is for a 2000 so the lever is flared wide at the top which makes it difficult to get the knob over.

Thanks.

I agree. I can't recall who I got these from, them or IAP. The trouble is that the void inside the knob is just a simple rectangle, so it's meant to fit over a straight lever. Since the actual lever is wide at the top, it splits these in half because it displaces the rubber.

Even if you get them installed without ruining them the rubber knobs split over time. Next time around I will file the levers so they are straight and install the knobs with a dab of black silicone in the slots.

same here.... split all three... after splitting the first one i tried the hot water on one and the slippery stuff on the other one (cant remember exactly what i used) ... the hot water came the closest to working...maybe i did not get it hot enough.... i am thinking grinding down the lever is the way to go... but have not ordered more knobs... please let me know what you end up doing and how it worked out

The issue isn't with getting them on - well, it is, but that's not the heart of it. The metal knob ends are flared and the rubber castings only have a straight interior void. Even if you get it on without splitting, the rubber is displaced and it's going to deform and crack sooner or later.

I'm going to order some more (at a 6pk of beer per...I like to put unnecessary expenses in terms of units of my favorite unnecessary expense) and hog out the middle of them with a small drill bit. If that doesn't work, I'm considering cutting a new one in half and removing the interior material and gluing the two halves over the metal lever end (although I doubt the longevity of this solution).

Since I've just completed restoring the interior, I'm hesitating unleashing the grinder on the heater levers. Filing would be super tedious.

I got mine from Csaba and Ramzi.
They fit really well.
I dabbed a tiny bit of dielectric grease in the knob slots and they went on smoothly with no indication that they might split.

Mine are the same as in the pic too, but sans the coating. Maybe AR's knobs are made to fit.
