Guys,
Decided to do a rear end job on my sons 78 124 1800. I am in the process of removing the axles to pull the differential. I know something is up. When I drained the oil a part of a gear tooth dropped out. My explain why I have been getting a noise in the rear end for the last couple of weeks. I have a manual and the manual as notes on this bard indicate that there is a rear axle ring clamp that has to be removed. My rear end has no such ring that I can find. I have a slide hammer and have attempted to remove with no luck. I have the pumpkin in the rear that does not have a back plate. The differential bolts form the front not the rear. Any hints or suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks

Ed,
Some 78s have the later style rears and the axles are held in place by four 17mm bolts behind the disc brake.
Page 27-8 of the manual. Sorry for the poor photo.

lanciahf,
Thanks for the response. I don't have those bolts either. I will take some clean shots and post later today or tonight. I am also cleaning around the axles and behind the flange to make sure the ring is not being hidden by years of grease and grime.
Thanks

Re: Rear Axle Removal
If no bolts then it has a snap ring behind the axle flange that is a paint to get out!

Re: Rear Axle Removal
You need to clean that grease out of where the axle goes into the housing. Its an internal snap ring inside the housing.
