Need help identifying what this thing on the top of my intake manifold is. I tried to unscrew it, that didn't work.
What is this and why can't I get it out?

it is a thermo activated vacuum switch. it goes into a cooling passage, it is absolutely harmless. it should come right out though. but you will need a plug so you wont leak coolant, you can just leave it alone and be fine.

I would like it out as I'm trying to shine up the manifold a bit but I have been wrenching on this thing and it just won't budge. It's not like a reverse thread or something I'm missing?

When I tried to remove it with a open ended and box end wrench I could not budge it. I ended up getting a deep socket and a long breaker bar. If you can't find a deep socket big enough, cut off the alloy portion just above the brass and use a shallower socket.

Ok, I will try to cut it down a bit, as I was not using a socket because I didn't have a deep enough one. I just didn't want to bust it off and need it. Thanks!

Kev,
Did you get this valve out? To remove it from my manifold, I used a impact wrench and socket. It plugs up with an M18 x 1.5 plug (same as plug used on O2 sensors). There is lots that can come off the manifold. Check my thread on intake manifolds:

lol. mine would not move, so i cut it flush to the brass, and plug welded the center portion.

No I never did get it out...sold the manifold and switching to fuel injection...problem solved, ha
