Looking to refurbish the block while I have the head off. 94k miles 2l 79carbed. Have read mixed opinions on the main bearings and whether or not its worth the trouble to change them. Engine has been sitting a loooong time but RWP and has been started recently with no problems. Any thoughts? How much of a PIA is it for a very novice mech?
Any other thoughts on a block overhaul as to what I should do? I'm trying to get a game plan together. Looking for a weekend driver, not looking to build a performance motor just long term reliability and hopefully no more oil leaks. The head will be swapped for a 1800 head. Csaba recommended the thrust washers, seals, freeze plugs, gaskets etc. I plan to change the piston rings also.
Thanks.

Re: Opinions on main bearing change & block overhaul
IMO, if you are going to do the bottom end, change everything. No point in changing the rings and not the main bearings.
Will the block stay in the car? It's a bit of a PITA to do it that way, but it's doable.

Thanks! Yes, I'm pulling the engine out.
