Exhaust manifold stud stripped/leaking

Post by lionshooter »

I have a head to exhaust manifold stud (rear upper) that is stripped and leaking badly. A previous repair had been made on it at a local Fiat shop and they used a "Time-Sert". (http://www.timesert.com/) Now that repair has failed and the Time-sert just rotates freely.
So my question is: Has anyone had experience using Time-serts? Can the old one be removed somehow and a larger one installed?
Would rather not buy a new head since I spent $1500 getting this one overhauled.

the problem is that now the hole is much larger than originally. Another time sert still won't have enough material to grab unless you go with a larger size. You may have to get the hole welded and redrilled, but it's hard to say without seeing the head

I can check with Time-Sert about installing the next larger size and try to find a stud w/ 2 different diameter threads. Sounds like a treasure hunt...
