why is the top bolt a pita

Post by narfire »

Dropping the tranny in the 72. Did the same in my 80 last fall, took about 45 minutes.
On the 72 got all the tranny bolts out,no problem, drive shaft dropped no problem, two lower bolts on the starter no problem.
2 hours later, still no connection with the top starter bolt
perhaps all the steel lines make it a pain, but going home to button up the 80 after re-shimming and sanding high spots on the AFM. Will try again tomorrow. I have enough extensions to go about 10 feet if needed but the universal 13 mm just does not want to connect or stay on. Tried a small magnet in the socket as well...nope.
I have Guiness at home :D
Man these cars can be frustrating at times. I'm still calmer than after I have to muck about under the drivers side dash for whatever reason..

The two things that I dread on these cars...clutch spring onto the pedal and the starter top bolt. Everything else is therapy really.
Ok, rant is over :)

Has anyone ever thought of/tried cutting an access port in the floor? Could be a replaceable screw-on cover.

Did you take of the trany mount off and lower the back of the trany as much as possible. It makes it easy on an 82. I did three of them this fall and it wasn't to bad that way. Hope it is fine for you tomarrow.
