Need some advice
Want to know if I can bolt up the exhaust manifold from a 1600 engine to a 1979 2000 engine carbed. I know, I have to block off the port to the EGR , would there be any other mods?
Thanks
Nick

Re: Need some advice
Down pipes would have to match 1600 manifold is 4 bolt and 79 was 6 bolt. I have a 1600 manifold and a 2 L block & will check the fit today if you like.

Re: Need some advice
the bolt pattern on the head side is a match. As stated, the exhaust end flange matches an early exhaust.

The down pipe is a 4 bolt. Hey Chris what did you use to block off the egr passage on the exhaust side? Thanks fellows for the info. This is great for I just bought an exhaust man ,it is off a 1600 engine as per seller ,on ebay .

Re: Need some advice
I have FI head and one from a 1800, so no blocking required. I do have a lump on the floor (head)from a 79 that I somehow inherited from someone upgrading to a 1800 head. The passage goes straight through and i don't believe is an issue if it is not blocked off. Just perhaps because of the air passing through, there might be a slight difference in temperature when the engine is warm/hot, whether that affects the head I wouldn't know.nibbes123 wrote:Hey Chris what did you use to block off the egr passage on the exhaust side?
Your welcome on the rack, glad it worked out.
Nick, if you can, see if an 1800 head is out there. A bolt on improvement over a 79/80 carb'd head.

Re: Need some advice
If you have the 4-2 exhaust manifold and the 2-1 downpipes that mate together then technically they will bolt up to the head as the exhaust ports and mounting stud patters are the same for all cylinder heads. The problem is that the 2L block is about 10mm taller and the 2L exhaust accounts for that. The 1600 exhaust when installed on a 2L will likely fowl on the underbody. Some members have gotten around this by making a 10mm thick spacer and using long studs to bolt the exhaust manifold to the downpipes.

Thanks Matt. Would you know what would be the best material available at your local parts store?

Re: Need some advice
Don't you already have a 4-2-1 exhaust on the 79, why would you want to change to the 1600 version?

Want to take out all the pollution piping on the exhaust side and intake side. Installing intake from a 1800 engine with a 34 DMSA carb, and exhaust from 1600 with smoother flow .

Re: Need some advice
I think some 79's had a 4-1 and some had a 4-2-1. On another forum regarding the same exact topic, other Fiat owners have been successful installing the early shorter exhaust system on later cars with the taller 2L block without the need for a spacer. Vick's list two different downipipes for the early 4-2, 4 bolt exhaust manifold, one for early 1400 and 1600cc enignes and one for the 1592 and 1800cc engines. The block height on all those engines is approximatly the same so you may want to call Vicks and see if they can measure the pipes or clear up why there is two.
Any machine shop should be able to make a 10mm spacer if you absolutly need it, alternatives are to use the flange from an old downpipe, which should be at least 5mm if not 7mm. Shorter motor mounts are another option, or sliding the existing motor mounts away from each side of the engine will drop it some. A thick manifold to head gasket will also help to gain a few more mm.
