First Gear Pops out

I am looking at a 1981 Fiat 124 this week supposedly first gear pops out of it/won't stay in gear. Supposedly the rest of gears work and the person just starts out in second. Its a pretty decent car otherwise. Any idea what it could be and what parts do I need to replace it.

Usually its 4th gear that does this but a bent shift fork and syncros are common failure items. Depends on if your willing to tackle the job yourself or not. If you have a shop pull the trans and replace the parts I would guess $800 dollars maybe more depending on the shop and parts needed. If you pull the trans yourself you would save about 300-400 dollars worth of labor. There are reman and new transmissions out there if you rather just replace it.

Ya I plan to do it myself just trying to get an idea what its going take and what options I have. I have done some searching on this site but not much luck with somebody else having a similar problem. I am no expert when it comes to transmissions so I was hoping there was a certain parts that usually cause this problem like a worn shifter fork or synchronizer ring on these cars.

check the wear on the gear where the shift hub contacts, if the teeth arent rounded replace the hub and syncro, and check the fork, and you should be good
