Fuel Pressure Regulator (No idle)

Post by Burningmustard »

Went to start the '82 2000 after about a week of sitting, and it wouldn't hold an idle, and under throttle seems rougher. Popped the hood and hear a hiss coming from the fuel pressure regulator area. tighened the screw for the vacuum hose and the hiss is gone but no change.

I'm sure this could many of things, but not really sure where to start. I would say the car has always run a bit rich, and today, it seemed maybe richer than normal. It has never had a problem with an idle in my three years and always been pretty smooth.

I guess my question is, could the fuel pressure regulator cause this? Is there a more typical part that would fail causing this. It seems like it could be a vacuum problem, but I really don't know much about it.

UPDATE

It was the air flow meter (i think that's what it's called). Stuck wide open, hence the reason it was rich, and not holding an idle. As I was working on other projects today it popped in my head to check the air meter since this happened a couple years ago.

I guess the question now is, what is the best way to lubricate the flap in the meter so I won't get stuck again.

Thanks!

you can't lube the flap, they stick because they're warped. I'd suggest you also replace the vacuum and fuel hoses before they fail completely

I agree (again) a nice weekend or a few nights during the week project. Pull the fuel rail and change out the lines to the injectors as well.
Not an expensive evolution, but once all the clamps are tight, it will give you a piece of mind as the old ones do fail and will start to drip fuel with the alternator and starter nearby....

I had, a sticky AFM which I'm wondering might have been the cause of some rough idling issues. I used some emery cloth and gently sanded a few spots where the flap was rubbing a tiny bit. Flap now swings the full range without any binding. If it is too warped, perhaps another AFM, (try used) is in order.
