Ok, think I'm at the point in the 72 restoration where I will try and get the car to run. I have wired things up without too many sparks and screw ups. Engine turns over, I now have spark but I have yet to try everything with fuel...
So after putting fuel in the tank (it has been cleaned ) , any recomendations to get it going. I don't know alot about carbs so thinking of dribbling a bit down the carb throat to see if it will kind of run enough to fill the bowl(s)? and when running I'm thinking there will be oil pressure so the electric pump will kick in and off to the races eh?
This is a new start on rebuilt carb and engine...
Any tips to get the carb filled or the above process sort of the way to go?
Thanks
Chris

Re: new start up
have you primed the oil pump to the point of pumping oil throughout the engine?

Re: new start up
have fire extinguisher ready
Its best to have a bit of cranking on an engine that has not been started in awhile to get some oil pressure built up. The V8's I built in the past was done via the distributor shaft and a rod straight to the oil pump and a drill. However cranking as you have done will be ok. Make sure your oil is full too . A bit of gas in the carb or starting fluid is better and with your electric pump it should be no problem. Did you check for power while cranking to your pump?
I don't know the history but if the belt was changed Id check the settings of the pointers to make sure everything is where it should be on the cams and crank.
If it starts then let it run for about 10 seconds then I would shut off and check for any fuel leaks.
Let us know how it goes.

Re: new start up
Great advice but difficult to do... Snow and timbers at the roll-up door. I have 3-4 freshly charged extuinguishers though. The shop is about 40 X 40 so a bit of room between the wood tools and Fiat engines, tranny's and various Spider bits and pieces.Zippy wrote:Roll it outside your garage first.
I have put about a tbls+ of oil in each cylinder and filled the cam towers.
How would one prime the oil pump when everything is buttoned up?
I have cranked while sorting out the wiring, oil in the cylinders I hoped would help there.
Anyway, I have some orders to fill this morning so I won't be trying this untill later.
Thanks for the advice

Re: new start up
I can't offer much technical advice, Chris, but can offer a hearty "Good Luck". Looking forward to seeing that little lady on Fathers Day - weather permitting, of course.
Cheers,
Bruce

Re: new start up
Poured some fuel down the carb and we have ignition....of sorts. Loud as I don't have pipe all the way back yet.
No fuel in the clear filter so direct wired the pump to try and prime the system and found the one short section of old fuel line I did not swap out weeped. Changed that and primed the lines and hopefully the carb. Fired up again but turned it off and going to wait until I have a second to crank while I snoop around the engine bay. So far no more leaks
Going home to have some well deserved instalation fluid
Chris

Re: new start up
Previously the engine ran with fuel down the carb. had it running enough to get close to 10 deg btdc.
I must have the relay with the oil pressure sending and the fuel pump all back - assward or something as the fuel pump did not work until I wired it directly to the large pink on the ignition. Did that and pulled the choke and turned the ignition and ....the bloody thing works, engine anyway. I'm glad as the re-built 34 dmsa was sitting for about a year. Might still have issues when I have it running a bit longer than 10-20 seconds. (inside closed shop)
I think some wires are crossed up. The tach does not work so going to have to figure what wires are messed up there, fuel gauge same.... so some electrical gremlins to sort out I guess.
In the meantime, I'll enjoy the engine running for now..
