Crankshaft Keyslot Indexed?

Post by rrs »

Is the keyslot for the crankshaft pulley indexed to top dead center - such that if the keyslot is pointing straight up the #1 is at TDC? Doing a timing belt change and had to pull the crank pulley due to lower shield on the 1979 2.0 engine, so I can view the keyslot easily.

I know about aligning the cam pulleys and the auxillary pulley, but not sure what the best way is to verify TDC on the crank, from what I have read on here the markings seem to have changed from year to year. I am thinking about pulling the plug on #1 and using the screwdriver in the cylinder trick but would prefer to just use the crankshaft key slot if that works, seems easier.

the crankshaft sprocket has a thin line scribed on it that should line up with a casting boss on the seal retainer
