Fuel Pressure lacking?

Post by smbaird37 »

I am having trouble starting my 71 spider. I believe I have ensured spark is not the issue. However I noticed that the fuel filter is empty and will percolate when I crank the engine but does not seem to fill. When the engine is at rest, the filter drains and is empty again. My guess is a ruptured fuel pump diaphragm me. What's the best way to test my theory? Any other ideas? My thanks in advance for you help!

Second thought... the check value gone bad. Wonder if the real question is: new pump, mechanical or go electric.
Third thought... Pulled the fuel line from just before the carb and was able to fill a beer bottle. So maybe the float bowl is full.

First, take the hose off the carb, direct into a can and crank the engine to see if you get fuel.
As far as ignition, you can test to be sure everything is ok by spraying carb cleaner in the carbs and see if it starts on that.

Thanks Vandor! I tried your first suggestion and got fuel fine. I did try ether a couple of time. It did pop once in a tell-tale misfire way. I am going back to rechecking the timing and spark before I start blaming my carb. grrr....
