Having a quick look on the "italian craigslist" (subito.it) about the spiders in Italy, I was amazed by the prices.
It seems much higher than what you report from the US ads picked in craigslist.
have a look by yourselves :
http://www.subito.it/annunci-liguria-it ... 4%20spider.
I guess it is because 85% of the cars were sold in the US (170 000 on 198 000 units built).
lucky you in the us

Yes, very expensive! You are probably right, that relative rarity and shipping costs to get them over there drive prices up. Same in Australia?

Re: lucky you in the us
That probably explains the occasional "sweep" through the US by folks from Europe to gather up Spiders, X-1/9's, etc. They just need to gather up enough to make it worth their while. A couple of folks I've spoke with over the past 3 years have relayed stories about a guy from Europe traveling through the Southwestern US buying up good and excellent FI Spiders and a few really nice carb versions. Apparently he shipped them all back to Europe.
Would be nice to have that kind of bank roll in order to do that!

I do not know if the italian market is very active, but I can tell you that the french one is not.
A few cars for sale, and they do not go easily (ads last several months).
It is also not very easy to get an american car being registered in France.
I remember a recent ad for a 71 imported american spider, with admin work to be done, suddenly converted in a donor car for sale....
maybe northern countries are more active ?

Westy, I can't imagine anything much more fun than cruising around the French Mediterranean in a well sorted Spider!

Yes Pete it is the same here. We also have the added cost of converting to right hand drive (if required). It's no longer mandatory to do the RHD conversion but many people still do.RRoller123 wrote:Yes, very expensive! Pete
My Spider came to Australia in the late 90's to fill spare space in a container of Mustang parts. I often wonder if you guys have any Mustangs left when I see the number of them on the roads here!
Prices of restored and converted cars have dropped here in the last 5 or 6 years. No doubt it's to do with the GFC.

"GFC: Global Financial Collapse". Got it. And most folks don't realize that the 1992 CRA is still in effect!
