Clutch questions

Post by pertyfly »

Okay, as I've said in another post, I am tearing my engine down to rebuild it. Just somehting I noted when taking the clutch off...

This clutch has no relief cuts, and has a lot of metalic particles in it, like brass, etc. Is this possibly an original clutch, or an old one? Or....is this what the replacements are like? Any ideas?

Here are some pics...hope you're able to see something in them! :)

I'd say the lack of grooves in the disc is just the mfg's design. The surface of the pressure plate looks a little nasty though. A key point to inspect on the disc is the Marcel spring inbetween the 2 linings. It should have a wave to it. If not, definitely replace it. Although if I was doing the job, I'd replace the unit anyway. The disc looks to me like it's saturated with some fluid, just because of the variation in darkness in spots

That clutch looks worn out to me. Appears that you have worn past the relief cuts, which aren't as deep as the rivets (from looking at the spare used clutch I've got). I'd order a new clutch / pressure plate combo.

They both look shot to me. In any case, I would always automatically change the clutch friction plate and thrust bearing having got as far as taking a gearbox or engine out for any other reason, whilst I had the opportunity, even if they had only done a low mileage. Driven plate depending on condition, but yours looks as if it would chew up a new friction plate pretty soon. Just my twopennyworth.
