1982 Fiat Spider

Post by ChuckRay »

I have an '82 Fiat Spider. When I bought it I read an article about Fiat selling the rights to Pininfarina but they weren't ready to take the last of them so they went to Ferrari to be finished thensent to Pininfarina. I have an '82 with Fiat emblems outside, a steering wheel with Ferrari's signature and Pininfarina 2000 on the glove dept. door. Was this one of the transition cars that may have hit all 3 factories?

It's not Ferrari on the Steering wheel.....all the cars (fiat included) were all built at the pininfarina factory, all the fiat 2000 models have pininfarina on the glovebox.
Where are your mirrors located, on the door or on the quarter window like the red car above? And is you dash board different in the middle?

More than likely you have a normal last Fiat branded model

I was told that my spider is an 83 as it says on my ownership but the vin plate inside the door says it was manufactured 10 -82. All the badges are Pininfarina except for on the wheel hubs and seatbelt buttons that all say Fiat. It has the 2000 emblem on the Back. It has nothing on the glovebox but has spidereuropa on the dash. I have only a drivers side mirror on quarter glass. I have been told that my car is rare. Is this true? Would it be considered an 83 or 82?

ChuckRay,
Your car is the same as mine. The steering wheel says Ferrero not Ferrari. Ferrero was a steering wheel manufacturer:

Juff83FIAT,
Your 1983 model Pinninfarina was built in late 1982 as is common practice. Many interior parts are different and apparently they put the mirror through the quarter window. Yes these are more rare than the pre-83s thus some parts are harder to find. There are several people on this site with '83s or '84s.

Yours is most likely an '83. Manufacture date of 10/82 is (for the most part) an '83 model. If your dashplate says Spidereuropa, it's not a US model. Is your speedometer in kilometers? (Oil pressure in bars and temp gauge in centigrade)?

From Wikipedia
"The body of the car was designed and marketed by Pininfarina. The convertible body was designed directly by Sergio Pininfarina, who used the already available designs of Chevrolet Corvette “Rondine” and Ferrari 275 GTS. Several years later, in 1981, on the 50th anniversary of Pininfarina, this fact was further emphasized by producing a Fiat Spider 2000 Pininfarina 50th (Golden) Anniversary Edition. In 1972, a sports version of the Spider was revealed. This was required for a type-approval of its rally version, which earned some remarkable success. The models sold in showrooms were marked as 124 CSA (C-Spider-Abarth). The vehicle had a capacity of 128 hp. In three years, Fiat manufactured less than 1,000 CSA models, which were intended for sale to individual clients. Apart from the Fiat Spider 2000 Pininfarina 50th (Golden) Anniversary Edition, this is one of the versions most eagerly sought by collectors.

The car was sold in Europe and the U.S. from its introduction until the 1975 model year when it was modified to comply with new U.S. regulations and no European version was produced. Sales in Europe resumed when Pininfarina took over production in 1983 under the name Pininfarina Europa Spider.[2]"

I think Sergio's name should be changed to Tom Tjaarda

My books on the history of the car agree that Tjaarda (sp?) was chief designer.

I am kilometers, bars and centigrade. It does have a painted red stamp that says USA on the cam cover though (the car is 100% original)
