If it was me, I would change the crank and aux shaft seals at the same time. They are cheap and easy to change while its apart.

New belt, tensioner bearing, and seals are on the way. Hopefully I can get this done before next week, and I'll report back then.

Finally got the t-belt and tensioner bearing changed (only took a month). No change in the sound.
I don't know what could have changed between when I drove the car from the front of the house off the trailer to the garage in the back and when I finally got the alternator belt on there a month later, but like I said before, I took the alt belt off and the sound was still there, so it's not the water pump (same belt) or the alternator or the alt belt.
Starting to think this was the wrong 124 to buy.

Since most of the front of the motor is ruled out, I would determine if it is coming from further back in the drive train such as clutch, release bearing, trans input shaft bearing. Does the sound remain when the clutch pedal is depressed?

You could try to determine more precisely the location of the sound by listening to various components with a mechanics stethoscope, or a long screwdriver.

Is the timing belt still rubbing against the front of the engine?

No change in the sound with clutch action, but it changes pitch with RPM. I don't think the timing belt is rubbing on anything. I can try the long screwdriver method, but it's so loud that I doubt I'll be able to tell anything.
When I had the timing belt done on my 944, it whined like this for 5000 miles or so, though it was quieter. This is apparently normal for the 944, but I can't find any indication that this car is like that.

a timing belt that is too tight will whine, very loudly

I asked this before but didn't get an answer, or my old brain didn't register it.... On my 80FI the belt is auto tensioned by the tensioner bearing spring. Is this different on earlier models? I wasn't aware that the tension was adjustable.

they all use the spring, but you can set the tension manually

I've found the spring doesn't put enough tension on the belt quite often

I didn't add any extra tension to the belt. It's all spring.

What is it about this timing belt that makes it so I can't re-tension it? Other timing belts can be tensioned more than once, and my 944 calls for a couple of re-tenisonings between belt changes.

Whining sound pretty much went away with more driving. Belt just needed to be broken in.
