VIN mistery

Post by Silvershadow »

Hi all,

I've recently bought an european 124 spider bs1. It has the correct 1608 engine (125bc000) and its VIN number is 124BS10033934.

The mistery on it is that, according to several sources, the first 1608 is the 124BS10033950! So, can anybody help me to better undstand this?

Thank you in advance,

Paul

well in my humble opinion, one of 2 things happened, the sources that show the begining number for a 1608 are incorrect, or some one has replaced the engine in your car. that serial number might have been for the begining production of the us spec cars

I thought the same also, but it still has the original vin plate and in it has the aforementioned numbers for both chassis and engine. And in all the places i've looked (mirafiori, german club, etc.) the 33950 number is constant. Someone on a italian forum raised one hypothesis that I thought at the yime to be a bit farfetched. He said that everytime a new model was presented to the public, a few cars (20 or so) were produced for the presentations in shows etc. These cars usually didn't made part of the "official" list of Fiat. Did anyone ever heard anything about this?

Thanks

at this stage its probably just at the point of shrugging your shoulders and saying "Italians". Fiat could have 100 reasons for why yours is out of sync with the reported VIN numbers, lol

My understanding is that:
BS0 = 1438cc
BS1 = 1608cc

In Europe the 1438 was available even after the 1608 was introduced. I had a Japanese customer that had a 1971 1438 Spider, and it's VIN was in the middle of other 1608 Spiders and started with BS0.

I beleive this to be true, I have here in Oz that the early BC coupe's (we never got the spider officially) had the 1400 motor option (don't know why you would choose the 1400 over the sweet 1608 with twin IDF's???)

Hi there,
our worldwide spiderregistry reports as first BS1 with 1608ccm the VIN: 124BS10023470.
I found it found in an italian user manual.

These are the BS1 spider with VIN under 30000:
124BS10023470 70 I ?
124BS10023485 ? D ?
124BS10023558 69/10 I ?
124BS10023560 ? USA California
124BS10025037 70 USA California
124BS10025925 ? SRB ?
124BS10027116 70 RO
124BS10027290 70/07 A Niederösterreich
124BS10028303 70/06 D Bayern
124BS10028307 70 NL Overijssel
124BS10028977 70/01 CH Aargau
124BS10029032 70/07 D Baden-Württemberg
124BS10029357 70 I Sicilia

124BS10029374 70 P Portalegre
124BS10029500 ? USA -
124BS10029703 ? P Caldas da Rainha

So your car is just a normal 1608ccm BS1 spider.
Good luck with your car! Can i add it to the registry?

Ciao,
Ralf (admin of the worldwide spiderregistry)

PS: The registry is still offlline because we are still searching for the right JOOMLA tool! But actually we got more than 7430 spider listed!

Hi Ralph,

Sorry for the (very) late answer...

Of course you can add it to the registry. The numbers you can check on the first post and the location is Porto, Portugal.

Hope to see the registry online very soon as it will be very helpful.
