THis sounds like a 50th Annivesary edition spider, commemorating FIAT's 50th Anniversary year. They made a numbered,1000 ca run. They were all painted a metal gold/sand color, had a light leather interior, a matching color top, and a number plaque (xx xf 1000) on the dash (maybe it was on the glove box door).

There were only 1000 made in this series, so they are a bit rare, but mechanically they were the same as the normal production car.

I'm pretty sure the 50th anniversary editions were 1981's though. Either your seller doesn't know what year he has, or he doesn't have an anniversary edition, or I don't know what I'm talking about.

They were numbered on the glovebox door, so that should be a good quick indicator, although I suppose a glovebox door could be swapped? Unlikely though.

I think many of the LE's were manufactured in 1980 so the date of manufacture on the drivers door post could be a 1980 date. I think they were all sold as 1981 model year cars. The LE number was located in three places. Somewhere on the dash I have seen the plate below the warning lights on center dash. Also on both sides of the car below the side emblems behind the doors.

Does anyone know what happened to the car??

They also had 14" wheels and a leather wrapped steering wheel.

it is currently for sale as we speak. the owner has a few people looking at it and wants to sell it asap because he is getting married. two mistakes in a row getting married and selling his Fiat spider!
