rewire entire car

Post by Grandpa »

I was going to tidy this up but think it's putting a bandaid on a tumor.

Plan is to replace with these two kits.

Has this been done before? I did some research and see a painless kit was used. The person did a nice writeup on it, Summit is cheaper and has more circuits (18).

fiats wiring (pasta) is not that bad in the 79 on cars, the early spiders especially pre 75 were horrable as when Guido ran out of red the just spliced in green with a black stripe and kept going. but the standardized harnesses of the late cars were very good.
most of the problems you will find are with poor connections and bad grounds (poor connections). Not a fault of the harness. If you want to make the harness bulletproof, change the connectors to weatherpack. then you will never have a corrosion problem

+ 1
the harness is fairly documented, and if you're patient and have time, the car is already dismantled so you should be able to work easily.

That's funny I've heard the same assembly line variations stories, lol.
This is a 12 year barn Fiat. It needed a exhaust first which we made, 2.5" SS. Yes the 2.5' is overkill but we had some scrap SS in that size. Even the muffler was a left over, basically only the heat coating of the header and powder coating of the muffler incurred costs.

I wanted to hear it run but ran into electical gremlins.
The fuse panel is the most concerning for me, looks pretty primitive. I want a bullet proof system so I'll rewire.

Cold side pic.

This reminds me I'd like to go SS lines to the fuel tank. Does anyone make a AN fitting gas tank cover? If not I'll fab it up.

no problems, i have totally rewired a fiat or 10 in my lifetime too. its not bad, i made my own harness. As with the scorpion, im making my own harness out of the original and the one from the 3000gt from which im taking the engine controls harness.
still deciding on options, such as a/c and such, there will be no emissions controls, want the install to look as near oem as possible with the conversion.

With apologies for the Alfa content, every time I look at the Alfaholics cars, I convince myself that any restoration of my Coupe will involve a full custom re-wire and clean-up.

I would like to know the clever solutions used to tidy things up. On the Alfas, I like the way the ignition leads go back to the firewall to a modern ignition system (using crank and throttle position sensors). I still wonder where all the ancillary wires are run (headlights and relays, sidemarkers etc.).

Unless your car has A/C, power windows and a gaggle of other electrics, you don't need more than 8 or 10 circuits. OE had only 9, with four for headlights alone. Keep it simple.
