valve clearence 79/80 2 liter carbed
Anyone know the valve clearance for the intake and exhaust valves. My car is a 1976 124 spider carbed but the motor has been changed out to a 79/80 2 liter still carbed. My manuel is for a 1976 124 spider carbed. The valve clearence from my manuel is .015-.019 for intake and .018-.021 for the exhaust. The intake measures in the .19 to .020 range and the exhaust measures in the .025 range except for two cyclinders which are around .019. Two questions: are the valve clearences the same on the 79/80 2 liter as the 1976 1756 motor? Question 2 : The car spits back through the carb on acceleration and has no power. Could the valve clearence cause this kind of problem? Any help would be appreciated.

Clearances are the same.
If you can, perhaps tighten up the clearance on the two exhaust cylinders, target 19 thou. . (just hope one is not #4 cyl.) Feeling real confident?(read time available), have a go at re-doing the intakes and shoot for 17 thou on all 4. Not really a difficult thing to do. If you have an IAP catalog, there is a table you can use that will help with the numbers. Going to need a few tools if you have not done this before..
If the weather there is anything like what I'm looking at outside at the moment... I'd be having time to re-shim mine and , engine swap, re-paint..... anyway, going to be awhile before the car sees the outside
Going downstairs this afternoon to putter on the car..

.017 intake
.019 exhaust
target numbers, me , i run mine a bit tight .015 and .017 on stock cams, i have aftermarket cams that specify .010 on both.
granted i have 1000's of shims so adjustment is easy for me. but rarely do they need adjustment

Re: valve clearence 79/80 2 liter carbed
Thanks for the info. I will try to get a IAP catalog and the tools required. As best as I can tell I really only need one tool plus the shims? I have a Vicks Auto Sport in the metro area and they can help me with what I need. I am in the Dallas area so we have a lot of decent weather to work on the car. Even though I keep it in the garage I like to have the door open. Thanks again for your responses.

As well as the shim tool, most will recomend a sharp pick type thing to pop the shim out of the bucket and I like one of those extendable magnets to pull the now loose shim up and out.
You will notice the bucket will have two lttle recesses along the top lip. When the lobe of the cam is up,spin the bucket so this recess is at the front. This where you poke the sharp thingy and the shim usually will pop up when the shim tool is holding the bucket down.. Carefull as the shim can slip back when loose and then becomes a pain to get out(magnet here)
Going to need a set of digital calipers as well... Sometimes the advertised shim size can be out and you need them to measure the shims you are pulling from your car anyway.
