Well Its happened

Post by thefeline »

My 80 spider's 2.0 finally kicked the bucket, so its new engine time! I have done swaps before so i think that's how this is gona end and the 2.0 was pretty slow, so I don't think another fiat twin cam will be working its way into the car(maybe I dont know yet), I was thinking about going inline6 with my little spider my junk yard has a stock pile of BMW I6's and jeep 4.0's they have 4 Rx7's and one MX5 also they have one toyota 1UZ V8 if i feel like killing myself with a engine swap.
But my question is what engine would you think would make the fiat the quick little sports car it SHOULD be.

inline 6 will be a challenge as it is much longer. but as soon as i finish putting one of these in my scorpion, guess what? Thats right, im going to install one in a spider. 222hp i will still have some firewall issues as this engine has the coolant entry and exit on the rear of the heads.

what is that engine? and I came from the turbo dodge family and I was thinking that a 2.5 turbo or non may be a good choice for the spider.

The Fiat TC, appropriately rebuilt and modified.
For the time and cost of doing an engine swap you could (usually much more easily) rebuild/modify the Fiat engine.

A newer Miata engine makes lots of power with a turbo or supercharger kit that are made for these cars.

i am in no way suggesting swapping engines. the lampredi twin cam is a work of art. My next project spider will be a 73 with a 2.0l fiat, but i am planning on making a fun toy with the mitsubishi motor, just because i can, not because it needs to be there

the last of the lancia delta integrale had a 16valve turbocharged unit that won many rally's
here is the complete motor minus the turbo for sale on flea bay
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/LANCIA-DELTA ... 19bfd2f0e0 should fund and freight permit......

If that was on my side of the world it is well worth the money.....

And I've got the bellhousing and starter for RH side fitment so the Fiat gearbox will bolt straight up, although you'll probably want the 131 box to handle the extra grunt, I've got 3 of those too.

I keep hearing people saying these car cook with a the 2.0s but I dont know if I am used to owning fast cars of if i got the only slow spider in the world but mine was a dog! I guess maybe I should give the twin cam another shot maybe step down to a 1800 or 1600 maybe those engines are the key to a quick spider.

And 6G72's make my pants fit badly they are EPIC! I was thinking it was a 6g72 but i didnt want to look like a dick when I was wrong. I know some guys into turboing the 6G72 plymouth sundances and those cars can COOK!

The stock motor is nothing to sing about compared to modern Jap stuff, but the cost of re-engineering could be spent on making the Fiat donk much better. There is no Jap motor that lights my fire like the sound of a Lampredi twincam on song. Up the compression and make it breathe, you'll have a new car, with an Italian heart that sings like Pavarotti, Jap motors make noise.

I agree with the others in that the twin cam fiat motor is its heart and soul. You can get as crazy as you want with it and will only net 150 horses. Still, factory specs on a 2L stock turbo was a 0-60 in 6.5 sec. This matches an MR-2 turbo. What it wont give you is the top end and it will rev out far short of the MR-2. By modern standards it will never be a fast car. Puting a bigger powerplant in there will give you much more punch off the line, but will lower the handling. These cars were designed to be agile, not a beast. My love for the car is its agility and demeaner. If you want a beast, go buy a mustang. :)

With MODIFIED 2.0s. The factory choked the stock 2000 with a Fiat 850 sized carburetor.
