Mouse in the car

Post by spidernut »

I pulled one of my Spiders out of the garage over the weekend and out ran a rather large field mouse from under the hood. The daughter thought it was small rat. I popped the hood and saw no damage, so put some poison underneath the car last night. I backed out this morning and Mickey came running out again. I checked the poison and he's been dining extensively on it. 3-4 days and it should be dead...I'll just have to follow the stench when it dies. :(

We have a MAJOR mouse infestation at work. My guess is it was hiding in my car and rode home with me since we've never seen a mouse in our neighboorhood in 3 years.

That would account for any strange "squeaks" you may have heard.

An exterminator once told me that mice do not smell bad for very long at all - their bodies dry out. Now, if it happens to die right up against your exhaust header, all bets are off!

By the way, you wouldn't have this problem if you hadn't removed your cat. :-)

I have a similar issue here. The car is in the unheated garage and mice find all sorts of stuff to make a nest, in or out of the car.
Currently I have 3 traps with peanut butter as bait. I will go for a week or more without any action and then for a couple of days I can have enough mice to almost make a coat..
I usually have the traps tied to something that weighs a few pounds as the little critters can trash about and dissapear into or under something I won't usually move till spring. You are right in that they dry out and don't usually smell. The odd one in the summer will but not winter.
I have gone away for a week and the little buggers had started to move into the trunk and spare wheel tub. Under the windshield cowling was another spot.
Don't put traps in the car, just encourages them.

50/50 mix of plaster of Paris and icing sugar, they scoff some, run outside to get a drink and the plaster sets in their gut. We all know if you can't eat, you can't shit, and if you can't shit you die! You'll find little plaster casts of rodent gastrointestinal tracts in the garden when planting your vegies in spring.

I bought a little gizmo that plugs into an electrical outlet next to my car and emits a high pitched sound that rodent's don't like. Got it at Canadian Tire for about $30. Has worked like a charm. No rodents, or evidence thereof, for a couple of years now.

Make sure you do not have any weeds or woodpiles around the garage or in the garage. Mice look at these areas as a safe haven. when the weather changes they will get into any space 1/4 inch or wider. So... they can get into any garage or shed! When i first moved to Texas we had an Armidillo problem in the back yard. Two ways to cure that problem. 1. Get rid of the grubs in the yard so he was not digging everyting in site up. 2. Spray preditor urine around the perimeter and re-apply after a rain fall. Baiting traps can be a self defeating process as you draw the little guys in with food.

Use some preditor urine or use the high pitched device. it is virtually impossible to seal the garage from anything seeking shelter, food.... I had a huge Rat Snake in the garage this summer. Scared the Cr*** out of me because it was at least five feet long and sitting under the step into the garage. You know, the first place your foot hits when you enter the garage from the house!!

I know tis will sound backwoods to some. The preditor urine does not leave an odor you will smell. It is cheap and it will keep just about anything away.
Buon giro a tutti! - enjoy the ride!

I tried the electronic device to no avail. Must have been the cheapie version. Now have gone back to traps and additionally using "fresh cab". Strong pine scent -smells like Christmas all year long, says the packets are good for 90 days. I find that you need to go shake the bag once a month to keep the pine smell going

I use to store the SPIDER in my friends dads barn. I ended up with chipmonks. They filled my trunk with corn. I took the battery out and they entered through the two big holes under it. Thank goodness they didn't eat the interior. That was 20 years ago.
