Shipping a spider in US
Shipping a spider in US
Any recommendations for shipping a spider?
It will be going from NJ to Austin.
Driving it or trailering it myself are really not in the cards.
Thanks
Geoff

A friend had good luck with uship.com, it's a site that connects private shippers with ppl wanting to move stuff. Only problem is you never know who will you get.
If you use a company, be use to use one that has their own trucks, as there are many out there that are just brokers.

Not sure if driving it, or you driving it, was not an option. I might be interested in driving it for you. I have free time and friends in San Antonio I'd like to see.

i am in the business of making these things happen. i moved this car from Rhode Island to Dalton, GA just this weekend!
Re: Shipping a spider in US
the best way to do it is to find access to a dock where you can drive the car up onto the dock and right onto a trailer. flatbed trailer would be the easiest because you can strap it down much more securely and tarp it if needed. there are a lot of carriers that are looking for partial loads and a spider would be considered a partial since these trailers can haul up to 48,000lbs! the trick is that you have to have access to a dock at the destination also to roll it off. i would have purchased a few parts cars to keep around the farm if i could have arranged a dock to roll them across!

Re: Shipping a spider in US
I wish I could find the shipping receipt for the company i used in 2004. I had an 83' spider shipped from Oak Ridge NJ just outside of NY to San antonio Texas. Price was $520. They came to my old house with a flatbed and took it to a demark point where they loaded several other cars on a carrier. I think the car changed car carriers once prior to landing at a demark point in SA., then they deliver it to my new house on a flatbed. Took them about 7-9 days to cross the country. That was almost nine years ago. Not sure if that price is valid or a couple changes in transport is something that interest you. Car showed up without a scratch. She did have some road dirt to be washed off.
In hindsight I might have been lucky. Also, it is less expenseive if the car is drivable. I don't think i would have choosen this method if the top was not in good shape.

Re: Shipping a spider in US
I'm not sure that the reference is negative. Living in San Antonio and dealing in cars you become aware of the taxes that the Mexican Government levies on current +1, +2, +3 model year cars entering the country. The taxation to bring a new or slightly used vehicle in the country literally doubles the price. What you see on the highways are tons of "cars In tow" heading South over the border. Typically it is an old pickup truck pulling a 10 year old american car over the border where it will be sold for all the money. Good business venture! On top of that, the people of Mexico similar to the people of Cuba will fix anything in order to have running transportation. The country has a huge gap between those that can afford a car and those that can not. Those that can not afford a car are very creative. With all that said.... You see some pretty sad cars in tow going into Mexico to be used. At times the method of tow is humerous as well because it is all they can afford. last week I saw a mid seventies chevy pickup truck with the bed converted to a flatbed. It had a Chevette sitting on the flat bed and a Daewoo Lanos in tow behind it.
My wife thought it would be offensive to take the picture because some people would not understand the reality. Still, I thought it was pretty darn funny!

I don't think Jim meant that in an offensive way. Living in Texas and working with Mexicans everyday, I have found that they are some of the most creative people you will find, and some of the most trustworthy.
