Hello
I want to replace the heavy bumpers from my '78 124 Spider with older thin chrome ones.
I'm looking at some front bumpers on ebay from a 1973 - which appear to be in 3 pieces. Is this normal? Pictures I can find on the internet all look like a single piece front piece.
Does anyone have one of the 3 piece bumpers?

these split bumper are unique to definatley a 74 model and maybe some late 73's?? Prior to this setup the front was one piece and the rears were 2 and the overiders were metal not rubber.
Cheers David

No I don't think those bars are what you're after.
There are some pics in tdskip's thread showing his 74 with the same type bars you picture.
In the first few posts these specific type of bars were discussed.

Thanks All - I think the one piece front is certainly the look I'm after.
Will hold out for some on eBay. Or maybe go with new ones from:

I've got a set of the harringtons (yet to put on) they are good quality but don't waste your money with their brackets, they are rubbish (at least when I got them)sbbaxter wrote:Thanks All - I think the one piece front is certainly the look I'm after.

What's wrong with them?
Bad fit? Bad coating?
I can't see there's much choice without the brackets.

just poorly cut and poorly bent, I needed to modify mine a lot and they still don't fit right.

Re: 124 Spider '74 Split Bumpers - pics?
i purchased harrington stainless steel bumpers. they are made in vietnam by hand. pounded over mandrel. the front bumpers are not as flat as the stock, but requires a very critical eye to see the issues. the bumper had no twist. the rears were fine. Here is the issue. the brackets on the back of the bumpers are poorly placed and dont line up with anything. I bought the bracket kits and they are substantial but dont match up with car. I spent about 8 hours per bracket getting it right. on the front, i finally cut off the corner tabs and fab'd a new set of middle brackets, mounted them to the car and rewelded them. The rear bumpers will not match the early style license plate lights so you will need to fab something there as well. If you dont have the fab skills you are better off buying a used set of steels and having them rechromed.

Thanks for the info re Harrington.
Will keep looking for a second hand original bumper, maybe one which needs repair and or rechrome
Already have some rears which need welding and rechroming. Anyone know a good rechromer in Seattle or Bellevue?
