Reed Valves

Post by katsi »

What do you use to plug the reed valves on a 79? I have tried every size oil plug I can find and none of them fit. I'm guessing it's a 16 mm but I can not find anything to fit. Anyone had any luck with this? Getting tiered of standing in line at the return counter.
Thanks :?

Are you talking about the air injection holes in the head?

Some are 18mmx1.50 and others are 16mx1.50. you can use oil drain plugs found at the auto parts store.

Sorry everyone, I am asking advice and giving the wrong info. The question should have been, what size threads will fill the reed valves. M-14 is too small and I can not find anything larger.

Do you want to screw something into the reed valve, or remove the reed valve and plug the hole in the head?

Funny Bernie,

Again 79 to 80 reed valve threads are either 18mmx1.50 or 16mx1.50. See my answer above.

Go to the oil drain plug section at your local auto parts store to find the plugs.

Ok, It's just that M-14 is the largest size in all 3 auto parts stores in town and it just falls in the hole. I'll keep looking.
Thanks.

@ 131 - Yes, to remove them compleetly and plug the holes in the head. Doing a carb conversion.

@ Baltobernie - the 79 & 80 2000cc have these valves between the spark plugs called reed valves. They vent the head through suction created in the air cleaner. When you run you car without these plugged or hooked up, it sounds terrible. You can put your hand over them when you are working on it without the air cleaner attached because again, the sound is unbearable. I don't know about the injected versions. They might not have them.
