Ever notice that there is no...

Post by vespistiSF »

videos on youtube of fast / quick 124 Spiders? There are a couple of abarth vids, plenty of 850 and X1/9 vids, but nothing showing say... a built 2.0 going fast. Why is this? If you know of any, please reply with link, I need some motivation.

Well not a 2.0ltr but a very healthy 1756 Spider trying to beat off a 125 with a 2.0 in it.

Some one was selling a 124 spider race car that was really quick on this site not too long ago.

It's just surprising that with all the 124 performance parts out there; suspension, brakes, engine etc., I rarely see a car that is totally dialed in. Seems like most go with one or two cosmetic mods- chrome air filter, removal of bumpers and painting random bits and pieces in the engine bay/interior and call it a day.

I'm also surprised that there aren't more Abarth Stradale clones.

Just thinking out loud...

I think the spider is the perfect hobby car cause its readily available easy to work on and parts are available and cheap. It was never known as a fast car but hose that know what a fun car it is buy em. It is of course possible to make it a fast car but that starts to get very expensive in a really "fast" way. That said I would love the chance to "build" my 1608 but simply can't afford to...

My spider FEELS way faster than many "known" fast cars. something about being tiny, loud, low, and the shot suspension sends the nose to the sky while the ancient tires spin through third gear. Sadly, though, it certainly doesn't look fast on video, and certainly wouldn't look fast with another car running right next to it. THAT'S why you won't find a video of MY car here anytime soon, lol.

I'm restoring an 850 Sport Coupe right now, when I'm done I'd like to build either a hot X1/9 or 124 Spider. Still in the decision phase. I figure a built 2.0 Spider has to be quicker/faster than a built 1.5 X1/9 but I could be wrong.

The resto on the 850 Sport Coupe has turned out to be far more trickier and expensive than I imagined/anticipated. It would have been far easier and more affordable to do an X or Spider.

Anyway the motivation I need is in figuring out which car to go with. Both are very different cars and I can't have both, it's a tough thing to figure out...

the key to the X1/9 is the handling, nothing much beats it. I love both but only own the spider, I'd seriously consider bolting a small turbo on the 1.5 X just for some more torque and power, they are a lot of fun around the track.

The X is amazing, there aren't many modern cars that can touch it for handling on the track. If I build a Spider, it'll be an Abarth Stradale replica, if I go with the X, it'd be a bad ass X in Miura Green or some other funky 70's color.

I think georgeramous is on the right path here. Yes, it is possible to tweak a spider but why? Because it's there  - Well, that is the only viable reason I can think of. Simply put, the spider is pretty torkey and nimble for a daily driver. I don't think it was ever designed to break speed records or handle corners exceptionally well. On the contrary, I think the spider is exactly what it was designed to be - a fun little car that has a lot of "WOW" factored into the curb appeal. Think about it, if all spiders looked like it's bastard cousin the Yogo, you wouldn't be driving one. Yet, if all yugo's looked like spiders, you just might be on the Yugo index page right now. I know I would.
