Malware Warning
My Fiat friends:
WARNING!!! This happened to me at work today so I can guarantee this is 100% authentic. If an Adobe Flash Player updater comes up on your computer, DO NOT click on the update icon in the lower right corner or on the "Adobe" pop up screen. It is Malware that will lock your computer and display a fake FBI warning. It is associated with Youtube videos and the update looks like the real thing. Even if you click to exit the updater (which is what I did), it will download to your computer. It is a fake exit icon. You will not be able to use your computer after this downloads.
If you get this update message, do not click on it no matter what. Microsoft Windows has tech support info on their site regarding this malware. It is worth reading!!!

Re: Malware Warning
Man o man, I got a "Ransomware" or FBI Moneypack thing on my computer and it was a pain to get off. Then not one week later my poor grandparents had a very similar one on theirs and it took a whole different set of procedures to fix theirs. Thank goodness for Facetime on cell phones.
I can't help but wonder if people actually fall for these things and go out and buy a card like instructed and just send these criminals cash. You figure there MUST be money in it!
Is that the kind of FBI thing you got?

It always amazes me what people will do when they get the right scare. I know someone that got one of those pop-up windows that say that it detected viruses on you computer and then offer to remove them. Al you have to do is download their program which "scans" your computer for free. For only $29.95 (or whatever) it will remove them. She went ahead a bought it using a credit card even though I had warned her about these things before (not the first time she had done this). The sad thing is that she WAS my wife's doctor! It took me quite a while to remove all that crap from her computer.

Ransomware is on the rise.... I'm a software dev with an interest in security, so I follow some of this stuff... Here's an article about ransomware from yesterday:

The best thing you can do is *not* to respond to the ransomware, and take it to a professional to remove it.

What Distro are you using right now? I go back and forth between windows and linux, and I have this new laptop for work that I'd like to run a dual boot on.

Re: Malware Warning
it's been about 3 years or so, but the last linux system I used was openSUSE and I freaking loved it. Primary reason at the time was I had a weak machine and Fedora and the few others I considered were better suited to nicer/newer machines. I've been on again and off again Linux since college in the last century, but it was never up to my standards in terms of "Just working." really required some knowhow to install and get the machine set where you wanted it. That was ok when it was more of a hobby, but I'm older and into other things now, so I just wanted a computer to use, not play with. That openSUSE was just about the first distribution I ever had that installed and had me fully using the computer in one sitting without hours at another computer problem solving over the internet forums for weird workarounds and solutions.

I've been using Mac's since 2005 or so, but running Linux since 1995 or so (originally Slackware and the pile of floppies).. I currently using Ubuntu at work, and Gentoo at home (servers). One of my Gentoo boxes was installed in 2002, and been continuous updated since.

Re: Malware Warning
Danno,
Yes that is the one with the FBI warning. The sick part is that I closed the window, but that is all it took to download the malware. Microsoft says if it shows up not to click on it even to close it. They say to use Task Manager and shut down all instances of Internet Explorer, then you have to follow a boat-load of instructions to get rid of this crap.
I'd say that these morons need a positive hobby, like restoring a Fiat Spider, but they'd probably just drive around looking for ways to cause others' Spiders to stop running.

Re: Malware Warning
Turn off auto updates entirely. Manually go to the Adobe website and download the update manually.
