Motor ID Number

Post by btexpress »

Can anyone tell me of a list that could help me identify what motor I have in my 1976 Fiat 124 spider. The number on the block is in the location that would indicate a 1980-81 2000. The block number as best as I can tell is G971744. The G could be a 0. The head is from a 1980-81 2000 which lead me to believe the entire motor is of that vintage. It has a weber carb without a number. I have many problems with this car but first I need to know what engine I am dealing with. For most part the archives have been a great help but I could not find anything on motor numbers. I found some #s on another web site but they were unreadable and you had to join a book club to print a copy. Any help would be appreciated. btexpress

the numbers that matter are stamped into the block in 1 of 2 locations. first place to look is right above the oil filter housing, if there is nothing there, look above the drivers side motor mount. if there is a flat pad there it will be a 2.0l and the numbers could be stamped there. the early 2.0 and all other sizes are stamped above the oil filter housing. should look like 132A1.040.4
or 132c2.031 etc. the actual serial number which is below that really means nothing

O.K I found the motor number. It was just where you said just over the motor mount. I aqm told that some times you can tell the range of years (IE pre 1979 or 1979 and after) depending on where the motor number is. It looks like 132c ? 040. I am not sure there is a number where the ? is or not. The number is some what obscure. It appears they did not get a good stamp or my eyes are going bad . Can you tell by what I have if the motor is a 1976 124 or 1980 2000?
