Has anybody ever made a console out of wood?

I make all sorts of things out of wood. What do you have in mind? If you don't like the exposed wood, you could always cover it with vinyl.

vinyl is an excruciatingly easy medium to work with, especially if you have lots of flat surfaces like wood panels would create.

However, if you were gonna do that, i would suggest visiting your upholsterer and picking up the cardboard commonly used for door panels instead of the wood. it will have some give to it, and is easier to cut than a sheet of plywood.

I was thinking of staining it the same color as my steering wheel, which I belive is red mohogany, and of course refinishing the shift knob and dash wood as well.

Good point, but I'm also thinking of putting vinyl on the sides or some other combo of vinyl and wood. I was thinkinginitially that the upper console would look good as wood coming down as one complete piece from the dash and then I expanded my ideas from there. Maybe my imagination is getting the best of me.

rust has been an issue for lots of owners, termites might be your downfall

Good one, but I am in the desert, so termites and rust are not much of a problem.

You could always accent the lower console with some mahoghany where the heater fan switch is and where the back ashtray sits. Then you don't have to worry about fabricating a whole console, which might prove to be heavy and hard to fit. Also, you can use wood as your radio mounting plate and pull the aluminum speaker grille and change that to wood, sort of like the later model cars.

I'm really interested in getting a mahogany dash to match my Nardi wheel...

The mahogany laminate available at Home Depot with the "iron on" adhesive looks interesting, does anybody have any experience with this? Of course matching the stain to the wheel won't be easy either...
