Preventive maintenance bits me in the butt

Post by htchevyii »

Don't you hate it when you go out of your way to fix something that's not broke and break it! I got the Spider all cleaned, waxed and lubed in preparation or it's winter slumber and decided it would be a good idea to flush the brake fluid. The right rear bleeder screw stripped out immediately, without even starting to get tight. It was a parts store reman and it took five to get two good ones on my '72, so I'm sure it wasn't very good to begin with. I guess I'll go buy one of these repair kits in the A.M. and see if it will work :x http://www.dormanproducts.com/p-1301-13915.aspx

Trey, if you have a mig welder, try the welded nut trick. Clean with brake cleaner first but I have pulled numerous broken bleeders with that method.

DON'T EVER clean anything you are going to weld with brake clean!!! It gives off PHOSGENE gas when it gets hot. This gas can kill in small amounts.

Anyone that believes cars are inanimate objects without feelings is crazy. You spend some time cleaning, and obviously loving, your car and when it senses you are going to put it away for several months it finds a way to keep you close. Just give her all the attention she needs before you put her away.

That's what my car told me to tell you

The bleeder didn't break, the threads pulled out of the caliper. The kit did work, you tap the caliper out to 1/8" pipe and screw in a fitting. She's washed, waxed, top is scotchguarded, fresh oil, fuel stabilizer and a bit of marvel mystery oil on the fuel and of course the brake fluid. :?

You could move down here to SoCal and not have to worry about getting a car ready for winter storage.
But then you'd have to put up with living in Southern California.
Never mind.
BTW Trey, when are you guys ever going to join the group from central Cal. and come down to the Best of France and Italy show?

If I had room to keep it at home inside, I wouldn't worry about doing much and drive it once in a while on nice days, but since I like to work on a project in the winter and it's done, it had to go away and the Chevy II is in the garage. It looks like a good show, but I don't know if I can bring myself to drive the spider that far, this country boy can't handle the city driving, especially in an unsafe car that I like :? I was too chicken to drive in to the all Italian show in Alameda last year!
