removing front and rear axles-RESOLVED

Post by stello3 »

I will be dropping the front and rear axles to work on them thoroughly and comfortably (alot of rust). Are there any safety/precautions I should be aware of?

Fronts are all the same, but rears are different. What year is your car?

Wow that is an insane amount of rust.... did the car spend a lot of time on salted roads?

Nope. that would explain all the rust but, it was parked in 120 degrees (dry) summers for about 5 years. and little to no rain through out the year. it's been out of commission since '94 collecting dust and rust.

I dropped the rear axle and gearbox today. It was a pain in the @$$. I thought I would do the front and back today but, the back gave me a lot of trouble. the nuts and bolts were easy to loosen. The gearbox mounting brackets were in the way of the A-arm mounting brackets. Lowering the gearbox to move the mounts out of the way caused the A-arm mounts to drop as well and the bolts ended up out of alignment. I was able to punch the bolts out but it took forever due to limited hammer swing space.

Front and rear axles are off. Didn't have much trouble removing nuts and bolts. I think the grease and layer of dirt saved them from seizing up. I put penetrating oil on 3 bolts is all. the only difficulty was the rear as stated in earlier post.
