stiffer shocks -ride height

Post by tiaf124 »

I purchased a 1973 124 spider .The previous owner has installed a set of Kyb gas-a-just ( which is the stiffer set of the kyb series for the 124 ) a couple of years ago .The car seemed to me as it was taller than other 124s that i am seeing .
Checking some photos of the car just before the install i noticed that it wasn't just an impression the car was lower before .
Is it possible the ride height to be increased after the install of a stiffer set shocks .
A mechanic told me that installing stiffer shocks may hold the car taller .
Is it so ?
I thought that only thicker springs or additional spacers may increase the height .
2nd : What is the total height of the stock springs themselves front and rear for pre 1973 ?
Thanks in advance

I believe these are white? Those are the stiff KYBs, sometimes they would rip out the front shock mount!
If they are high pressure gas they may be contributing to the higher ride height. I would replace them either with the silver KYBs or hydraulic shocks.

Is the gas-a-just type that hard that can damage the shock mount ,or raise the car :o
I thought only yellow Konis are hard
In my 124 is actually this type
http://www.kyb.com/products/shocks/gasajust.php
They seem to sell them both in grey and white (i don't know if there is any difference) mine are the grey ones

the other type is the gr-2 ,excell -g twin tube ones which are black and grey respectively http://www.kyb.com/products/shocks/gr2.php .
Which exactly do you mean?

Having just completed a shock change, my ride height does not appear to have changed however, having new shocks did comprimise the already weak spring perch  Having a solid new part can certainly put a new strain on lesser/older parts it would be connected to.

The Gas-a-just ones are the stiff ones, the GR-2 is the softer one that the Fiat Parts vendors sell.

Konis are hard on the hard setting, soft on the soft setting. I've run yellow Konis on two Spiders and they are not any stiffer than any other shock if set to full soft.
