I too thought about wood visors but rejected the idea because they could be deadly or possibly blinding in even a small accident.

My mirror doesn't rattle but the day-night tab has broken and won't hold position. I've taken it apart several times in an attempt to fix it, but nothing I've tried so far has worked. Does anyone know a fix for this other than gluing the insides in one position?

If my memory serves me correctly, that day/night tab is held in either position by a spring inside the mirror. Maybe it is missing or has shifted position inside?

Just for follow up on my earlier post, the rattles on mine have finally been eliminated by the bead of black RTV I applied around the glass to frame interface, and it isn't visible at all.

Hmm ... No spring inside mine. Does anyone have a picture of the inside of the mirror showing the spring and how that tab functions? Maybe my Harbor Freight "Box O' Springs" has something to fit.

I am picking my mirror up on Friday. I just had the glass replaced (stupid me was inspired by this thread so I took it apart to clean it etc and when putting it back on..........crack!    ) There were no springs inside mine, only a flexible plastic tab for moving the mirror. They have siliconed the mirror to this tab which will help with any vibrations/rattles and will keep the mirror from moving over bumps etc.

yes... i have one remaining on the passenger side and drivers is missing.... little hood rattle on that side... so i use a folded shop rag instead... then when i check the oil i allways have a rag :D ... did the same with my mirror... took it apart to clean it and stop a rattle and broke it.... just took off the whole thing and liked how much better i could see.... curious if the police will agree with my decision ... but no problems yet... would love to fine a dash mounted mirror... not sure how functional it would be but would satisfy any legal stuff about mirrors i bet

my plan exactly, keep the new mirror in the map pocket in case the po po say anything. It really opens your view (which I improved by removing the visors as well). I may put it back though as I like to check behind me when making turns onto street with no lights or Stop signs as not everyone pays attention

as far as the hood I strongly recommend the rubber pads from Auto Ricambi http://www.autoricambi.us/product/RE2-404/Hood-End-Pad/

OK, Fixed it!

Quite correct. The flex joint of the tab breaks.
Image

I cut a piece of flexible plastic from some extra drawer dividers and heated up my soldering pencil.
Image

I melted the plastic into the broken joint ....

... and it's fixed. (Well, it works for now... :? )
Image

Don't know how long it'll remain flexible, but so far, so good. Worth a try ... replacement mirror costs ~$130 and I've searched online and nobody seems to have functioning used ones for sale.
Do polish the mirror and glass before you reassemble ...
