Pinion gear decided to break a couple of teeth off when starting from a stop sign, so I am now looking for a axel and differential from a late mode 78 or 79 spider. I am also considering putting in an older axel with the removable pumpkin. I am located near Stockton/Modesto California and will consider most anything you guys can come up with. I'm not really sure what rear gears you have. My 1800 76, de-smogged and with a 4-2-1 exhaust, was a 4.3 and when the diff gave up the ghost it gave me an opportunity to switch to a 3.9 rear and I've never looked back. Dropped 400+ revs at 70 MPH, but it is around town that I enjoy it the most. Third gear is so much fun now, and I often forget to shift up from 4 to 5.
Of course there are many others here that think this swap is a terrible idea. Mark, for one, saws th 4.3 is the way to go. Anyway you should just consider your options while you can. Here's an old thread about this subject. There are others too you can search for.
