Waves

Post by JConnerly »

I have noticed something I find interesting. Here in Spokane WA we are having a beautiful Indian summer and the sports cars are all out of their garages enjoying the warm afternoons. I frequently pass other Italian cars and the occasional MG or Triumph and we wave and nod, each of us understanding, I suppose, the joy of owning one of these great cars, the fine weather and the sound of our engines as we purr along. I even got a favorable response from a Porsche driver the other day. But Mercedes drivers? Not so much! They stare straight ahead and I get no response. Anyone else notice this? Am I being overly sensitive? My Italian friend is feeling a little hurt by this and was tempted to use some very expressive gestures.

They are probably distracted! Too busy thinking about how they are going to pay for the repair parts. My 2 MBs drove me crazy with $80 distributor caps, etc. Said adios to them quickly.

My 'other car' is a Jeep, and in case you didn't know, there are specific 'Jeep waving rules', very similar to the rules and traditions surrounding military salutes:
http://jeeptalk.org/jeep_wave.php

Around Chicagoland, 99% of vintage cars seem to be muscle cars & hot rods. Therefore, when I pass a foreign vintage car of any sort, I'm usually so surprised that I forget to wave. I believe this happens to other drivers, too. The exceptions seem to be the vintage cars of very high-end origins, such as Ferrari, Bentley, and such.

They wave for no one.

The most waves that I ever got was when I was driving my new GTI in 1983. Every GTI that I came across seemed to wave, so I waved back.

from day one on my first motorcycle I learned about the "wave" I, like most of us here am constantly getting nods, waves, smiles and shout outs from motorists & passer-byes. What I've discovered in my 25yrs of driving is that some people are jerks and some are not however, there is a definite pattern. Usually guys, who think they have better cars and they usually have a smug sense of entitlement yet when you talk to them you soon realize it has nothing to do with their cars, it is just them  There are certain cars that seem to carry an air of pretentiousness and snobbery

Saturday night we were on our way to a End Of Summer event at Mapleshade NJ Fiat dealer. As our 3 Fiats were heading in one direction we saw an Alpha Romeo driving in the oposite direction. We received one of the most enthusiatic two handed waves I have ever seen. Both arms up in the air no hands on the wheel. Got to love those italian car owners.
On the other side of the coin you have the Mercedes, BMW, Porsche and Audi folks. Never a wave or even a glance. Harumph!

A separate issue: an hour ago my wife and I pulled out of a parking place on the street at a local farmers market and set off several car alarms! We LOAO! Methinks my exhaust is a little too loud!

Last week we went out to get ice creame. When we where pulling out a James Dean Porsche was pulling in, a couple in their late 50's. The lady passenger was looking our spider over, but not waving, when my wife said " our car is neater than you car". She realy supprised me with that.

To many people, a car is just a car. Some of us old car nuts think it's important to wave to acknowledge our membership in the club. I wave at old convertibles if the top is down. I know most will wave back but some won't. I know I have been waved at, at that point when I didn't expect it, and didn't have time to wave back and be visible. Somtimes it's frustrating but most times it's a lot of fun.

going to be in Spokane the first week of October. Try to get together with Docgraphics (Don Raugust) in Hayden Lake. Let me know if you are interested in hooking up.

ive always been a fan of the friendly "toot" of the horn. I personally love the high pitched Italian sound. I do it when I pass fiats (including the new 500) and most do it back.

We all wave at each other because we're happy to be driving the cars instead of fixing them. The Mercedes folks don't have that experience, they tend to run forever.

Want to meet a jerk? Hang out with a Pantera owner.

I notice that I get more waves (from just about everybody) when I have the top down on the Fiat. I find it especially interesting the number of motorcycle waves I get. You know what I'm talking about, the point at the centerline almost wave, wave. I feel almost as part of some club as I did when I got a dodge ram and every farmer around waves at me now.
