How is to cold to drive?

Post by Philbilly »

Ok so I am a newbie Fiat owner of 7 weeks. The hint of fall is hitting here in the Midwest. Was out motoring this morning at 59 degrees. I took the kids to school a couple of weeks ago at about 55 degrees. Yes a bit chilly. I love motoring in the Fiat so I see myself really pushing it as it gets colder.

I fear I will be the knuckle head driving in 30 degree weather (before I park it for the winter) with a parka and ski gloves...

Hello my name is Phil, I have a 1982 Fiat and I have a problem.

Phil,

Do you have a top and a heater? You're good to go. All that should stop you is snow or salt.

Last winter was very mild here in the East. Some of us Jersey guys pretty much drove all winter long. Salt went down only once and some later rain washed it away.

Didn't have a heater last year so I bundled up. This year the heater's fixed. Fiat heaters work good.

Enjoy.

When ever it gets cold, I drop the top, roll up the windows , turn on the heater and drive. Very enjoyable. I remember one day while following Mark, both cars had the top down. It started to rain. We just drove faster and started passing everyone, fun stuff.

COLD. What's that? Was driving in Jan and Feb. Never too cold to drive. You can always get a hard top. Only thing that stops me is rain, snow and salted roads. Other than that enjoy.

I've got Brady's wind deflector on my roll bar and a heater that will almost melt my shoe. I almost never drive with the top up. The wind deflector helps alot

a few years ago we did a winter run up Mt Baldy. The weather was a little dodgy down on the flatlands and turned into a blizzard when we got up the mountain. We posted pics of the snow and as I recall, I was the only one with the top down

Never too cold, at least according to my friend. :D

I also had to explain to the police a few times why I was heading up and over a Swiss alpine pass in the winter, with the top down (MX-5 at the time), when there were metres of snow on each side of the road. Some of my best drives were having the whole road to myself, tail going left and right, crisp fresh air in my nostrils. Just make sure you wear a scarf! Warm neck = no sniffles.

Now I know where those rusty floorboards come from! Actually this reminds me of back in the day bringing my X1/9 back from the West Coast, and through the mountains of NM being caught in a 2ft snow storm. That was actually a lot of fun!

Redline was there a big fire around there? Why did the fire department spray that foam everywhere?

Top down, windows up and the heater on... works here for the drive to work.On the way home it has warmed up and can turn the heater off.

I agree with spiderrey and narfire, roll up the windows and turn the heater on and keep on trucking. I remember one time driving in Tulsa with snow on the ground. The sun was out, so I put the top down. I noticed my ears were stinging, and then I drove by a bank and it read something like 28°F!! Don't recall stopping to put the top up. Shoot, the '69 I drive nowadays doesn't even have the top frame still in it. It's somewhere in the barn after sanding and repainting, awaiting a new canvas.
