I once rented a dolly to retrieve one. It was not a fun trip. The next time I asked about a trailer and was told it was about $10 more. That was a no-brainer. I've done it both ways and will never dolly one again. A trailer is the ONLY way to go in my book.

Either I am missing something, or I have been EXTREMELY lucky over the years. I used to flat-tow (with a tow bar) my old Beetles without locking the wheel (some didn't have locking columns). I was told a long time ago to always be sure the steering wheel is UNlocked when flat-towing.

I stand corrected - steering should be unlocked when flat towing.

I just moved from Dallas to Houston and I rented a trailer from U-Haul for $59. Well worth the money! The only issue we had was with the narrow track of the 124 meaning we had to be really precise when putting it on there!
