Could be old septic or runoff drain. I found something similar under the driveway and under the old garage we tore down here on my property which was built in 1878. The old septics (if they are old enough) have long passed the stage of having any smell remaining. The house initially may have had no indoor plumbing, then what they would typically do is add a "bathroom" hanging off the back, with LITERALLY a 55 gal drum under a pipe that came out from under the floor. I assume that they would empty this regularly somehow, but it is a mystery to me. I have seen this still in existence (but unused) in 2 other old houses, when we were looking to buy this home. A better solution evolved (around 1900 I think) to bury that pipe and run it to a pit of rocks on the property edge. This is what we found when we excavated under the driveway and dug the foundation for the new shop. Archeology in action!

Leach fields like that are still quite common in undeveloped / rural areas all over the world, including the US.

When we built our cabin in the woods a few years ago, I installed a formal septic system for the toilet output and directed the output from the sinks and shower through a grease trap to a leaching pit. The system worked great - particularly in providing irrigation to the trees etc around the pit itself.

"Title 5" here in MA makes the septic designs very formal and complex now, and require a pretty large leaching field. Big problem on small lots or near wetlands. My friends on the Cape have waterfront, nice spot, small lot, can't get the septic approved, and have to resort to a holding tank/regular pumping arrangement. OK for seasonal use.

O K, time for a question. To get power from existing fuse box to new main lug. Is the accomplished with a 60 amp 220 breaker installed in existing box, or is this accomplished another way. If accomplished with a breaker, this defeats the purpose of the new main lug.

Today I pulled a piece of board off the wall in the garage. Im gonna install the electrical panel in this area and a walk thru door here. I found the p o,s handy work behind the board.
