Thanks Keith.

The car has 81,500 original miles from one owner (I'm the second), and everything appears to work fine. Goes into all gears easily, never pops out of any of them. I may occasionally have to double clutch to get it into a gear, usually 1st after I've stopped at a light or something. But other than that, I get that whirring sound in neutral with my foot off the clutch (which goes away when I depress the clutch pedal), and I think in some of the other gears. But it's subtle.

So it sounds like that bearing set would probably take care of my issue then (and I'm thinking a clutch adjustment). Good to hear. And I would assume sooner is better than later, but I can still drive it without fear of breaking down.

the little bearing between the input shaft and the main shaft is most likely the culprit

So, don't anything until you know what is going on. Are the pretty easy to detect? Visually, or audible?

that is rebuilt, or repaired , not remanufactured.

Typically remanufactured implies that the particular item goes back to the original production line (or authorized repair/rebuild center, which SHOULD have factory test/rebuild equipment) where critical dimensions are all checked and original tests are run. When the people who originally built something get their hands on it, they can see stuff immediately. After you have made a few hunded thousand of something, you can tell whats wrong by listening to it or feeling it. I was always amazed at how quickly my Techs would track down and repair complex issues on stuff that came back to our plant. I just recalled that back in 1979, we (Nameless Computer Company now part of another big computer company here) sold a huge computer system to the LA Times. Well for whatever reason the contract didn't work out and I got the task of sorting it all out from a quality standpoint when the many 100's of major components came back to our NH factory. What a job, took months. I still have nightmares. LOL.

TO ME REMANUFACTURED MEANS: all wear items replaced. for a transmission that would mean all gears, shift hubs, all bearings, all shift forks, all syncro's. the only items i see staying is the layshaft, mainshaft, shifter shafts and lockout devices, the 5th reverse idler and reverse gear if not worn. but all forward gears have wear surfaces that get dameages in shifting and should be replaced.

now for rebuilt, all new syncro's, and forks if needed, new shift hubs, inspect and replace bearings as needed, same with individual gears.

In OUR reman transmission everything is replaced, except 5th gear items, as on 5th both the sleeve and synchro ring can be turned around so they use their non-worn side.
All seven bearings are replaced, gears 1 tru 4, 2 shiftforks, 4 synchro rings, 4 synchro springs, and the 2 sliders.

ok, key part being back to the original production line
no such posibility for fiat gearboxes.

maybe a repair by a skilled and experienced mechanic who knows his way around fiats and has acces to proper tools and NOS parts, but it's still only a rebuild.
