Who rebuilds transmissions?

Post by maytag »

Hey y'all:
so.... I installed a used trans, with unknown provenance, because i knew mine was bad.
this one ain't great.

I can keep buying $100 transmissions.....
but I;d really rather have a good on in it.

Who have y'all used, that does a good job, but won't kill the bank?
I'm no Boy-Racer..... but if I can't take every on-ramp at TWICE the posted limit.... I'm a total failure!

Maytag, you should be able to accomplish this with the help of a manual. The books lay it out step-by-step with pics

o I'm sure I could..... but it's all about TIME these days. :?

but thanks for the idea, and the vote of confidence.

Is there such a thing as a 'kit' that I could have on hand? or is this a "tear it apart, mic it all out, order the parts I need to replace" sort of project?

Most transmissions you can buy a kit, comes with brgs and seals, I would bet you can for our fiats too.
Simple trans you will have no issues.
Unless you try to put relays in it :)

I did mine and order that kit http://www.ebay.com/itm/Fiat-124-Coupe- ... dc&vxp=mtr.
You will also need a gasket set and you can change the synchro.

This is a topic I am interested in, because it sounds as if I will be in a similar situation....within the next 5 years

I like to study up, you know! Sure, Maytag might be able to rebuild a transmission, but what about someone who isn't as familiar with relays

Better to get a rebuilt transmission from a place like Bayless, or to buy this kit and go for it? I have an input shaft bearing on it's way to failure.

Mine make a little noise when the my foot's off the clutch and in neutral. Is that all you need to change are the bearings, synchro, and gaskets? How much do the last 2 cost?

Actually the bearings are very often reusable, if I was on a budget those would be the last thing I'd change, unless one was bad.

I always replace all the synchro rings on 1-4 and the springs under them, as those can break. Unless they look perfect I replace the synchro sleeves and the shift forks. Gears may need replacing, they each need to be inspected.

Or you can replace every bearing, synchros, sleeve, and shiftfork, and have basically a new transmission.
Any competent shop can do the work. Jon Logan does great work, and I have probably over 40 transmission under my belt.

Guiliot,
All you really need to do is change the bad parts. If it is making noise, it has a bad bearing. WHen aparts, spin/inspect the bearings. Change bad ones. I often change all of em, if one has failed it has been spreading metal dust thru everything.
If it shifts fine, synchros and shift forks are OK. If it grinds into gear or pops out, you have parts to change.
