Painting The Timing Belt Cover

Post by RRoller123 »

I have a question on this: I have used engine degreaser and various detergents and scrubbed the heck out of this plastic cover, but there remain some deep grease/oil stains that just won't come off. Those of you who have painted this plastic cover, how did you get it completely clean? Or did you prime over the "permanent" stains? I am hesitant to put this in the blast booth as I think it could really rough up the plastic surface.

I degreased and scotchbited it. used a rattlecan of silver plastic paint, then went over the top with urethane clear. shot it too soon and the silver reacted. came out looking hammered. me likey :D

Thanks, so I will go with what I have. I have degreased and scrubbed the buhgeezus out of it. AZRuss: I had the same problem with clearcoating one of my wheels. If you don't wait for like a day or more, there is a real risk of the clearcoat wrinkling the underlying pigment coat.

brake fluid will loosen the paint for you to wash it off and repaint it
but it has to sit on there for awhile to get under the paint

and it wont work on primer
when you do everything correct people arent sure youve done anything at all (futurama)

I painted mine with Rustoleum "Sun Yellow" as recommended by someone else on here. It looks just like the original yellow color.

Those "self-etching" primers seem to work really well too. I use it on everything now as a standard.
